Who Are the 6%?
A National Crisis Demands a Bold Solution
Every day, police officers encounter situations involving individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). These interactions can be challenging and, at times, life-threatening. The statistics are staggering—6% of the U.S. population, approximately 14 million people, live with an SMI such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, or major depressive disorder. These individuals are often misunderstood, leading to tragic outcomes for families, communities, and law enforcement.
It’s time for change.
